Pat O’Brien is currently a Principal with the World Agricultural Economic and Environmental Services. O’Brien concentrates his efforts at WAEES on agriculture issues in many regions of the world. He is presently focused on tracking the environmental stewardship of global agriculture, ongoing analysis of the biofuels area, and successful development of a collaboration with China.
O’Brien has held economist positions for the President’s Commission on International Trade and Investment Policy and Population Resource and Environmental Balance, as well as the Director at ERS/USDA for the Commodity Economics Division, Commercial Agricultural Division, Rural Economics Division. He held the position of Deputy Administrator for the Fund for Rural America and Division Director for the Information Services Division at ERS/USDA. Since his retirement in 1999, he has established private consulting specializing in applying economics to issues related to agriculture, food, biofuels, and natural resources.
O’Brien received his B.S. degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC, M.S. degree in Economics and Law from Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC and Baltimore MD and further graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, USDA Graduate School, Harvard University and Brookings Institute.
